Wailers Formed

The band formed when self-taught musician Hubert Winston McIntosh known as Peter Tosh met Neville Livingston known as Bunny Wailer and Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley) in 1963. By late 1963 Junior Braithwaite, Beverly Kelso, and Cherry Smith had joined the Wailers. After Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the band in 1974, Bob Marley began touring with new band members.

Rasta

Bob Marley was a member for some years of the Rastafari Movement whose culture was a key element in the development of reggae. Bob Marley became a passionate proponent of Rastafari, taking their music out of the socially deprived areas of Jamaica and onto the international music scene. He was interviewd once

Interviewer: "Can you tell the people what it means being a Rastafarian?"
Bob: "I would say to the people, Be still, and know that His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia is the Almighty. Now, the Bible seh so, Babylon newspaper seh so, and I and

I the children seh so. Yunno? So I don't see how much more reveal our people want. Wha' dem want? a white God, well God come black. True true."[

Personally I don't think he answered the question exactly, he seemed around the bush but not defining what it is to be a Rastafarian. What he did say was in Rastafarians believe a black God will come & that it is emperor of selassie of Ethiopa.

The Down Fall of A Legend

July 1977 Bob Marley found that he had a malignant melanoma under the toe nail. It was not primarily caused by a soccer injury, instead it was a symptom of the already existing cancer. His doctor advised him to amputate his toe but Bob refused to due to his religious beliefs. With this illness Bob still continued touring. The album "Uprising" (released May 1980) contained a song called "Redemption Song" which was his way of speaking of how he accepted the terms of his life which would lead to mere death. After the bands tour where his biggest concert was in Milan with 100,000 people the band went to America. He first performed at Madison Square Garden part of the Uprising tour. He then continued to the Stanely Theater that is now called the Benedum Center which is located in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania. Little did people know that it would be his last performance.

"Turn Your Lights Down Low"

The song "Turn Your Lights Down Low" released in 1977 was written by Bob for someone special in his life. He created this song for his lover Cindy Breakspeare who had currently won Miss World 1976. The relationship they had was very known, the two always in newspapers. This made Bobs wife very jealous and furious. Even though she usually accepted the fact that he had lovers this one bothered her extremely due to them being so public on the relationship. Bobs relationship with Cindy lead to them having a child named Damian Marley.

Faithful?

Even though Bob was married that didn't mean he only stayed with one women. His wife was Rita, with Rita he still went around sleeping with other women. His wife accepted that she knew how Bob was. He believed he was entitled to have "Many Queens", queens is what he would call his women. Rita was one of his background singers she did not let this affect there music. Bob would at times have women is his room he wanted out and he would have to call Rita to take them out of his room.

Duppy Conqueror

In this song he says and speaks of being a duppy conqueror. The duppy is what they believe an evil spirit. What he and his band did in Jamaica before they had ever performed in front of an audience was perform in a cemetery, they thought that if they could perform in front of the duppy they couldn't fear performing in front of anyone else. Therefore, they were duppy conqueror's.
